Hewitt Signs With Phils
Phillies first round pick Anthony Hewitt, number 24 overall, signed with the organization today.
He will be introduced to the Philadelphia media this weekend at Citizens Bank Park.
Hewitt will visit the Major League club this weekend to meet the rest of the front office, future teammates, local media and the fans he hopes to be playing in front of in the coming years.
Hewitt, during his stay in Philly, will also take batting practice with the big league club on Friday and will more than likely stay to watch the game between the Phillies and Mets. He should be in for a treat since this rivalry has become one of the best in baseball alongside the Red Sox-Yankees rivalry.
Hewitt, drafted out of Connecticut’s Salisbury School, is 19 years-old and has a ton of raw talent. He will head to Clearwater for extended spring training and then either move to the Threshers ball club or to the Williamsport Crosscutters.
Hewitt played shortstop in high school but also played third base during summer leagues and said he would welcome the move to third base if the Phillies asked him to do so, who are still searching for a third baseman since Scott Rolen was traded to the Cardinals.
In other news, the Phillies announced today that starter Brett Myers will not move to the bullpen but has accepted an assignment to Triple-A Lehigh Valley. He will make a start tomorrow versus the Scranton Wilkes-Barre Yankees and GM Pat Gillick said that his starts will be monitored.
Don’t be surprised if Myers is still in the minors at the end of the season, or at least until the September 1st call-ups are announced. Triple-A starter J.A. Happ is expected to take Myers place on the Major League roster by Wednesday and could possibly make his second Major League start by Thursday if the Phillies don’t rearrange their rotation.
Myers’ longtime spot in the rotation could also be in jeopardy if the Phillies acquire another starter before the July 31st trading deadline, which they are reported to be working towards.
