Anything you can do I can do better. Or at least equally.

In response to the Brewers trading for Indians ace C.C. Sabathia, the Cubs landed themselves another front-end starter for the stretch run on Tuesday, trading for A’s ace Rich Harden and Chad Gaudin.

The Cubs sent Eric Patterson, Matt Murton, Sean Gallagher and minor leaguer Josh Donaldson.

With the acquisition of Harden, the NL Central leading Cubs have answered their fan’s prayers for a big trade, and have shown the Brewers that they mean business.

Harden’s numbers:

5-1 2.34 ERA in 13 starts for 2008. He spent the beginning of the season (one month) on the DL for a shoulder strain.

Harden is expected to join the Cubs on Wednesday.

Gaudin is 5-3 with a 3.59 ERA in 26 games, six of them starts.

Matt Murton, a former Cubs top prospect, was hitting only .250 in 40 at-bats while going back and forth to Chicago and Triple-A.

Gallagher was 3-4 with a 4.45 ERA in 12 games, 10 of them starts.

Patterson was hitting .237 with a homerun and seven RBIs in only 38 at-bats. He has been sent to the minors four times this season; the latest on July 3rd.

Donaldson, while with Single-A Peoria, was hitting .217 with six homeruns.

Harden is expected to make his Cubs debut during the team’s upcoming series with the San Francisco Giants.
