Selig’s State of the Game Address

Published by Jim Vassallo at 8:32 pm under General Baseball, MILB, MLB Edit This

Major League Baseball commissioner Bud Selig gave his ‘State of the Game’ address earlier today via an internet chat.

Some of his key points of discussion were the All-Star Game, instant replay, the thought of asterisks being placed in the record books, maple bats and baseball’s economy.

Selig hopes that instant replay is in place by August, a long shot, but his true goal is to have it in place and working without any problems by the time the postseason rolls around. The purpose; to avert a disaster such as the Jeffrey Maier fiasco that occured in 1996 when the Yankees went at it with the Orioles at Yankee Stadium.

Also on today’s docket was the discussion of the All-Star Game. Selig feels that since the winner of the game receives home-field advantage in the World Series it has brought more meaning to the contest and more heart from the players who are involved.

Selig went on to discuss the investigation into the dangers of maple bats and what alternatives could be used on the field.

The commissioner also discussed whether or not there would be asterisks placed in the record books alongside Barry Bonds’ and Mark McGwire’s names to mention a few.

Despite the struggling economy of the United States, Selig says that the economy of baseball is thriving better than ever.

You can read all of the information from his online chat at ESPN.com.

The 79th All-Star Game and final one to be played at Yankee Stadium gets underway in only moments on FOX.
