Pudge A Yankee

Published by Jim Vassallo at 9:07 pm under General Baseball, MLB Edit This

The Yankees pulled off another blockbuster deal today, acquiring catcher All-Star catcher Ivan Rodriguez from the Tigers for reliever Kyle Farnsworth.

This is the second deal in less than a week for the Yankees that bolsters their lineup.

They acquired outfielder Xavier Nady and reliever Damaso Marte last weekend to bolster their outfield and bullpen for the stretch run.

Rodriguez is in the final year of a $50 million contract that he signed with the Tigers after the 2003 season, in which he helped the Florida Marlins beat the Yankees in the World Series.

Rodriguez is a 13-time Gold Glove winner, 14-time All-Star and was named the American League MVP in 1999. His 13 Gold Gloves is a record for catchers. He is one of only three players in history to earn 12-plus Gold Gloves and hit .300 for a career. The other two players are Willie Mays and Roberto Clemente.

He has 293 homeruns and 1,214 RBIs over 18 big league seasons.

This is Farnsworth’s second tour of duty with the Tigers. He spent four months in 2005 with Detroit before being traded at the deadline to the Atlanta Braves.

Farnsworth is 1-2 with a 3.65 ERA in 2008.

Pudge is expected to join the Yankees on Thursday when the team begins a four game set with the Angels.
