Baseball Loses A Voice

Published by Jim Vassallo at 8:14 pm under General Baseball, MLB Edit This

The Major League Baseball world lost one of its most popular and famous voices on Sunday.

Skip Caray, the son of the legendary Harry Caray, passed away at his home on Sunday. He went to take a nap and never woke up.

His two sons, Chip and Josh, are carrying on the broadcasting tradition of the Caray name. Chip is the Braves and TBS play-by-play announcer while Josh is the Braves Class-A affiliate play-by-play announcer.

Caray began his career in Braves broadcasting career in 1976 but was battling a multitude of ailments that he credited to diabetes. His baseball broadcasting career began in 1963 with the Tulsa Oilers.

His two most memorable calls were in 1991 and 1995. In 1991, he screamed “Braves win, Braves win, Braves win, Braves win;” when Sid Bream scored the winning run to clinch the NLCS.

In 1995, he screamed “Yes! Yes! Yes!;” when center fielder Marquis Grissom caught the final out of the 1995 World Series that clinched it for the Braves.

Caray is also survived by his wife Paula, Chip, Josh, daughters Shayelyn and Cindy, and seven grandchildren.

Caray was inducted into the Braves Hall of Fame in 2004.

The Braves partnership with TBS came to an end after the 2007 season; their 30th year of affiliation. Caray was still broadcasting Braves games on the radio but missed this weekend’s games because he was battling bronchitis.

That is sad. There was another we lost recently too and now the name escapes me. Radio announcing is an art. I always preferred listening to a radio game over a television broadcast.
