Blowouts Abound

Published by Jim Vassallo at 7:51 am under General Baseball, MLB Edit This

It was a busy day around baseball on Friday and it began around 3pm Eastern time.

It was a day for blowouts, shutouts and one-run ballgames.

There were three shutouts, two one-run games, and a handful of blowouts.

One of those blowouts helped to change a division lead in the American League.

The day got underway with a blowout in Chicago. The Cubs, the National League’s best team, were hosting the Nationals, the National League’s worst team.

Things didn’t go so well for the Cubbies as they fell to the Nationals by a final score of 13-5. Willie Harris chipped in for the Nats with a grand slam.

In other action from around the league, there was an 8-1 Phillies win over the Dodgers in the first game of a four game set in Philly.

The Mets shutout Houston 3-0. They still lead the East by 2.5 over the Phils.

The Twins shutout and blewout the Angels 9-0. Couple that with the Rays win over the White Sox and the Twins are now alone in first place in the American League Central.

The other blowouts from Friday came from Milwaukee and St. Louis. The Brew Crew knocked the Pirates around 10-4 and the Cardinals demolished the Braves by a score of 18-3.

Our final stop around the league is in San Francisco where the Giants shutout the Padres 5-0 behind 8 scoreless innings from Tim Lincecum. He is now 14-3 on the season. His ERA is now 2.48. He picked upĀ 8 strikeouts through the 8 innings. He walked three and allowed only four hits.

Saturday should be an even better day of baseball around the league as the pennant and division races begin to heat up as we head towards the final month of play in the regular season.
