NL Wild Card Still Undecided
Well, the Mets got what they asked for from ace Johan Santana on Saturday, a shot to keep them alive in the playoff hunt.
Santana went 9 innings for a 2-0 win over the Florida Marlins at Shea. He allowed only three hits in the effort on only three days’ rest.
The Brewers had a chance to remain a game up on the Mets if they could beat the Cubs at Miller Park but weren’t able to do so. The Cubs sat the majority of their regulars on Saturday but the beleaguered Brewers pitching staff couldn’t get the job done in a 7-3 loss.
Ben Sheets got the start and was touched up early for four runs. He hadn’t pitched in over a week due to a sore elbow. That might have been a bad decision for interim manager Dale Sveum.
Now the Brewers have to throw C.C. Sabathia on three days’ rest Sunday to at least earn a tie for the Wild Card with the Mets and a one game play-in on Monday at New York.
The Mets send the bi-polar Oliver Perez to the hill to save their season on Sunday.
It all comes down to this; two games on the slate today in the National League mean something.
If both teams win or if both teams lose they will go head to head at Shea Monday for what should be a craptacular play-in game. I say that because neither Sabathia nor Santana will be able to pitch. The fans will be treated to more than likely rookie Jon Niese and who only knows for the Brewers.
Is it possible that we could be seeing our second straight tie for the Wild Card after 162 games have been played?
Let’s hope not. This year’s play-in game might not be as exciting as last year’s turned out to be. But you never know what can happen.
