AL and NL Rookies of the Year Announced

The American League and National League Rookies of the Year were announced at 2pm on Monday.

The winners, which came to no surprise at all to anyone who followed baseball this season, were Evan Longoria and Geovany Soto.

Longoria, a member of the American League Champion Tampa Bay Rays, took home the AL honor while Soto took home the honor in the NL as a member of the Chicago Cubs.

Soto was the first rookie in history to start at catcher for the National League All-Star squad when he started for the 2008 team at Yankee Stadium in New York.

Longoria, who did not start the 2008 season in the Majors, put up incredible numbers while also missing time towards the end of the season due to an injury.

Longoria is the first American League rookie to unanimously win the award since Nomar Garciaparra did so in 1997 with Boston.

Longoria hit .272 with 27 homeruns and 85 RBIs while Soto added a .285 average while hitting 23 homeruns and driving in 83 runs.
