Two Major Trades in the Works

There are two major trades in the works as we speak between the Oakland Athletics and Colorado Rockies and the Florida Marlins and the Washington Nationals.

The first trade, between the Rox and the A’s, involves the highly coveted outfielder Matt Holliday. Holliday is reportedly the only player headed to the A’s for a reported three players. Right now those players seem to be closer Huston Street, lefty pitcher Greg Smith and outfielder Carlos Gonzalez.

Smith and Gonzalez were acquired before the 2008 season from the Diamonbacks for Dan Haren.

The Rockies asked for Street because they will lose closer Brian Fuentes to free agency.

Holliday will be a free agent following the 2009 season and declined a four year deal worth $85 million. His agent is Scott Boras, who usually makes his clients test the free agent market when their contracts are up.

Street was the American League Rookie of the Year in 2005. He has 98 saves in four seasons, with a career high of 37 in 2006.

The other major trade possibility of the day is between the Marlins and Nationals. The Nationals will send infielder Emilio Bonifacio and Minor League pitcher P.J. Dean to the Marlins for pitcher Scott Olsen and outfielder Josh Willingham.

Another player being thrown into the deal, reportedly, is infielder Jason Smolinski coming from the Nationals organization.

The deal has not been officially announced or confirmed by either team and more than likely will not be announced until Tuesday.
