Yanks Sign 2003 AL ROY

The New York Yankees have signed former 2003 Rookie of the Year Angel Berroa to a Minor League contract with an invitation to Spring Training.

Berroa will be battling for a reserve infield position on the club for the 2009 season and his main competition will be Yankees farmhand Cody Ransom.

Ransom played in 33 games with the Yankees in 2008.

Berroa hit .287 with 17 homeruns and 73 RBIs for the Kansas City Royals when he won the Rookie of the Year Award in 2003.

His numbers have since declined. In 2008 he hit only .230 with one homerun and 16 RBIs in 84 games with the Los Angeles Dodgers after he was traded to LA for Minor League infielder Juan Rivera from the Royals.
